What is a Gallery Wrap?

Canvas Gallery Wrap
Original print wrapped around frame

A gallery wrap is a finished, ready-to-hang canvas print with no visible frame. Basically, the canvas print is stretched tight around a 1.5” internal wood frame so that the edges of the canvas, and the wood, do not show. The corners are hidden by a blind fold, and the image continues around the sides of the frame.

Gallery wrap canvas prints are excellent alternatives to framing in that they will work with almost any decor and color scheme. Gallery-wrapped prints present the viewer with a different view from all sides of the picture, and generally cost less than the same size framed print.

At ePingo, our canvas is laminated with a protective finish that protects the canvas and increases longevity. You may choose gloss (a slight glossy sheen) or lustre (a very low glare finish).

What kinds of images would work as gallery wraps?
Almost any image will work as a gallery wrap. Our first approach is to wrap the image you send around the frame size you specify. If you give us special instructions, we can keep all of your image on the front of the canvas, making a wrapping border by adding colored or mirrored borders, or extending image elements.

If we are using only your original image, with no borders, you’ll want to pick an image with less-important elements on the edges. If your family portrait is cropped closely, you might end up with heads, feet or arms wrapped around the sides.

Panoramas are a special case. It is technically difficult to stretch the canvas tightly for a panorama print that has a short side of less than 12 inches, and we recommend changing to one of our ready-to-frame products.

How much space do we need for the wrapping border?
We will wrap 1.5” on each side of the canvas print around the frame.

What are my wrapping options?

  • Standard Procedure: Your image is adjusted to a final size that is 3" more, on each side, than the print size you ordered. This extra canvas is wrapped around the side of the frame to produce your size.

Example: You order a 16 x 20 wrapped print. We enlarge your image proportionately, so that the short side is 19 inches. If the long side side ends up greater than 23 inches, the extra is cropped off, keeping the main part of the image on the front.
  • Set the Short or Long Side: You pick the dimension that is most important to you--the final size of the short or long side. We enlarge so that the selected side will be the correct final size. The other side "floats", which means that it enlarges proportionately, with no stretching or cropping. We use the entire image. The price of your print may change, depending on the final size.

Example: You send an image, requesting a short side of 16". We enlarge the short side to 19", and the long side "floats" to 28". Your final print will be 16 x 25.

If you choose this option, please specify the length of the side you prefer.

Here are some options that will allow your entire image to show on the front.

Extended Image Border
  • Colored Border: Add a colored wrapping border to the image to cover the sides of the internal frame. The border could be a color in your image, white, black, or a color you choose. Specify the color you want in the special instructions. FREE!
  • Colored Border on Front: Add a colored wrapping border, but also bring that border onto the front, using it to frame the image. Specifiy the color, and the size on the front of the print, in special instructions. FREE!
  • Mirrored Border: Copy 1.5” of each edge of the image, invert (mirror) it, attach it back on the edge and use it for the wrapping border. $15 per image.
  • Extended Image: Use elements in your image, such as sky, sea, sand, trees, lawn, etc., to create a wrapping border that blends with your image. $25 per image.
  • If those do not appeal to you, consider changing to one of our Canvas Ready-to-Frame options, which will keep the entire image facing front.

How do I prepare my photos to be gallery wrapped?

You do not need to prepare your images for gallery wrapping. You can select the type of gallery wrapped image you want and have ePingo do the rest.

If you want to prepare your images before you upload, please follow the directions below.

  1. Decide what size you would like your print to be on the front face.
For example, we are creating a 16 x 20 wrapped print.

  2. In your imaging software, set the rulers (the way you measure size) to inches.

  3. Adjust your image to 300 dpi (dots per inch—a measure of resolution).

  4. Begin enlarging your image by adding 3” to the final size of your short side. (If your short side is 16”, set the final size to 19”.) This allows enough for the image to wrap around the frame.  The long side will enlarge proportionately.

  5. Your long side should end up to be 3” longer than your final desired size. If it's more than 3" longer, you’ll need to crop down to size. So, a final size of 20” on the long side will need to be cropped to 23”.
If you don’t like the result, play with your settings a bit. If your image doesn’t crop well, you might want to set the long side to its natural size. Instead of a 16 x 20, have it printed at, say,16 x 21.

  6. If you really don’t like the effect of the wrap, experiment with a colored border.

  7. When you place your order, request the size of the print you would like to face forward. If you want a 16 x 20, order a 16 x 20. If the natural size (16x 21) works out as a better choice order a 16x21.

Most important: Tell us in the special instructions that your image is already sized to wrap.

Example 1. The final size was meant to be 16 by 24, so the short side was set at 19. The long side enlarged proportionately to 28.5, which was longer than needed. The right side is cropped by 1.5 inches to a width of 27”. The green border indicates the wrap edge of the print and is used to show the limits of the front surface

Photo EnlargementExample 2. The image was cropped to size 16x24. We didn’t want to wrap the image, so a 1.5” color border was added for the wrapping border. The red border is the part of the image that will wrap,

How long will my print last?

We use pigmented Vivera inks that will not fade for years. The addition of the gloss or lustre lamination extends the rating to 100+ years. The laminate protects the print from UV light, dirt and airborne contaminants and allows for cleaning the surface. Please see Media Specifications for more details .

Does the picture have mounting hardware?

Yes, the picture is complete and ready to hang on the wall.
